Mr. Riddick may know law, but he is about the rudest small-town lawyer I have ever seen. The disrespect for emotional or financial matters is truly astonishing. There are other law firms in Smithfield, and surrounding areas. Please don't think your options are limited.

I've been using Bill Riddick for my real estate closing for years! His calm demeanor and vast knowledge of the law, specifically real estate law, have been a true asset. The real rock stars of the office are Carol & Lori! They make sure my closings happen on time and are always available when I need them!

My son used Ashby Pope in a criminal case a few years ago. He had a bad drug addiction and needed a lot of help & a good lawyer willing to fight for him. He was very young and really didn't know what was best for him. He thought lawyers had the best interest of the clients in mind. Well she had told him he should plead guilty & take a plea of a sentence that was to go by the guidelines placed by the court....which would have been fine. But when the judge came out he made it clear that he had already made his mind up in his chambers & that he was going to sentence him well above the guidelines & proceeded to scold & belittle a young man with a severe drug addiction in front of the entire court & harshly sentence him to many years in prison. His lawyer "Ashby Pope" never said a word in his defense or even try to help him in any way. In fact after it was over she She advised him that he should NOT appeal the sentence & to just deal with it. My son did NOT agree & told her that was not the plea he had agreed to and wanted to appeal immediately as he only had 30 days to be filed. Mrs Pope was then supposed to file the appeal on his behalf. I even contacted her myself by phone to remind her that he wanted the appeal. I was later informed that she did NOT file the appeal & was then told it was too late to file one. I feel she was a horrible lawyer & also found out later that she had worked along side this Judge "Wayne Farmer" & was good friends with him. Also had represented me as a lawyer before becoming a judge & we had a falling out because he had not disclosed to me that he had represented my ex wife in our divorce against me. This Judge should not have even been presiding over a case involving my son as a conflict of interest! I was not in the area when my son went to court & did not know this was the judge in his case or I would have spoke up....But a good lawyer & a fair judge should have done what was right and recused himself & she should have known all this. But she was appointed by the court to my sons case & wanted to do as little work as possible & GOD FORBID she stand up against her good buddy the judge. There is a lot of "good ole boy" politics in Isle Of Wight courts & honestly a lot of corruption. Has been for a long time. And this woman will NOT fight for you or your family. If you need a lawyer to fight for your life...Ashby Pope is NOT the one!

I called needing assistance with a deed transfer. Mrs. Carol was very much informative, helpful, and extremely understanding to my needs. her professionalism & caring demeanor was very welcoming. Her willingness to go over & beyond to assist me was outstanding. I have not met her in person, yet I'm sure the encounter would be as great. thank you so much for assisting me with everything I needed & understanding the process.
