I do NOT recommend Sean or his firm based on the fact that his firm repeatedly missed deadlines with the court and when I requested a reduction in fees for this his response was to bully me into believing that he had done a good job. While my custody case was resolved to my satisfaction, the service I received from Sean and his office was, I believe, unacceptable. In my opinion, if you want an attorney that you will have to do most of the work for or one that you will continuously have to remind to do their job, then Sean is your man. If you want an attorney that will do their job timely without constant reminders, I strongly suggest you look elsewhere. Full details below. Good luck with your attorney search!
July 24, 2025 Hearing Paperwork: The judge directed that the post trial paperwork be filed with the court, and Sean stated in court he would draft and file. It wasn't until I reached out to Sean three months after the hearing that he acknowledged he had not filed the order. I finally received the executed order in the middle of October after having to remind him to file and write the order for his paralegal because they didn't have the correct information in the initial draft. Meanwhile, the office had not problem sending invoices every 10 days requesting payment for work they had not yet completed.
July 2025 De Novo Pretrial Paperwork: Because the pretrial paperwork was not filed on time, the judge limited what we were able to present and discuss at trial. I spent a significant amount of time drafting and preparing the documentation to be submitted as evidence only to learn we were not able to present the evidence due to the missed filing deadline. Sean called me to explain that his colleague experienced a personal trauma with her own alcoholic abuser and missed the deadline, but there is a pattern of missed filings and therefore this was not a one-off situation that can be simply written off due to those circumstances. When I requested a reduction in fees for the missed filing, Sean turned it around on me saying I didn't give them enough time to review the revisions and meet the filing deadline. However, there wouldn't have been so many revisions to make if his team had done a proper job with the arguments in the first place.
April 2024 Hearing Paperwork: The post-trial paperwork from the April 2024 hearing was not filed with the court until September 2024, only after I followed up regarding the six-month review hearing that should have been held in October 2024. Not only did this cost me additional fees because I was charged nearly $500 for the court transcripts since Sean and his team no longer remembered the details needed to file the order, it resulted in the 6 month review being pushed out to 10 months. That was four additional months the parenting time order I was fighting remained in place. Four additional months my children were subjected to unnecessary trauma because Sean and his team neglected to file the order timely.
In my opinion, for the reasons above and more, Sean Cox is not an attorney I would recommend. To anyone. Ever.

I do NOT recommend Sean Cox or any attorney at this firm, especially if you are involved in a high conflict divorce with domestic violence. Reaching an attorney was nearly impossible, and emails went ignored. Saying this divorce was mishandled does not even come close. I was mislead and misrepresented and now, a couple years out from the inception of working with this firm, it has become increasingly alarming how negative and dangerous the outcome of their neglect has been. I was repeatedly told "Michigan is a 50/50 state". This is not true and completely over simplifying "equitable distribution" and they did not advise or work on my behalf.
Frankly, however, far more concerning was the misrepresentation concerning custody of our child. To be abundantly clear, there was (and is) ample, physical evidence as to abusive and chaotic nature and mental health concerns of my former partner and the continuing threat to the well being of child and myself. When attempting to advocated for myself the attorneys, I was told repeatedly that my case was "not that important" and "not that serious". For an example of that I am discussing, the FOC eval recommended only supervised for my former partner and several treatment evaluation referrals. Instead of working at all with this recommendation, Sean Cox did nothing and the outcome was basically did nothing and significantly decreased my ability to protect my child and myself. This barely scratches the surface of the severity of the mismanagement of my case. Absolutely go elsewhere.

I used Sean Cox for family law.
Sean is an amazing attorney who took my case to heart. He definitely is not a puppy who was in the corner just watching. He is fierce and meaningful. He's a dog with a mean bite. Which is what I needed.
Most lawyers now days don't fight, he fights til he's blue in the face. He takes cases to heart.
And I would hire him again and again.
If you communicate with their office, they communicate right back.
Secondly, Shayne and Yash are BEYOND amazing staff too. They helped me in many ways as well. Knowledgeable and full of information for all my questions. I genuinely cannot thank them enough.
They both deserve a raise.
As a fighting father, 6 years into a fight. I highly recommend Sean. I'm thankful I found Sean.
Thank you all.

My wife and I had a custody case that lasted over a year. During that time Sean never truly even learned the names of the children involved in the case. Over 20k later and multiple court dates being delayed so he could go on vacations absolutely nothing has changed.
He does a great job of pretending outrage when you kids are being abused or mistreated. He was almost never prepared for court with very little understanding of the situation, going into every court date. During our mediation he was so engrossed in his phone by the time he realized what had transpired the entire time he was confused and surprised when we said mediation was a waste of time. Acting upset how we'd feel that way, confused on the fact we'd been talking to the mediator for hours getting no where. Of course we were charge by the hour.
Sean got aggressive and cursed at my wife multiple times after we brought up the concern that he was incapable of following the case or even remembering the kids names or the babysitter that was abusing them, he confused her for their grandmother multiple times. When corrected he'd reply " same difference".
His paralegals were the only people that seemed to actually care about more than billable hours. I dont recommend this office for financial reasons and if you care about what ever issue youd bring to this office.

Sean Cox has been going to battle for me for the last few years in my complex custody case. I could not ask for a better advocate. I have been to Court with Sean a couple times a month over the last six months and what an amazing outcome was achieved. Thanks to the hard work of Sean and his team, as of this past fall, I know have full custody of my daughter and I have my house back. Communication, follow up and customer service were outstanding. Being Active Duty Military, my case was very difficult with having to be overseas for long periods of time but Sean got it done. Shayne was the paralegal assigned to my case and she was always there for me, sometime every day, through this ordeal. If you are looking for legal team to fight for your child in a custody case, or divorce or an family law matter, I highly recommend this law firm. You will get outstanding legal representation provided at a fair and reasonable cost.
