Attorney Stephen Barnes and his team are amongst the absolute best in the business! I had the opportunity and pleasure to refer and observe him handle a wrongful death medical malpractice case for a wonderful, but completely devastated family - wife and 2 young daughters. He allowed me to sit in through the intake and pre-suit mediation pieces. This incident occurred in the peak of the pandemic, but I was still able to hear and see the compassion with which he spoke with the client even over Zoom. He shared with me his mediation prep work and presentation deck that were proactively provided to the defense, which were incredibly detailed. His preparation was beyond impressive. I watched as he confidently and professionally told the defense at mediation that their policy was insufficient and that he believed there were other parties and policies that should be at the table as well - as he calmly walked away. He thoroughly explained his thought process to the client and continually kept her apprised of the next steps. I then watched as he zealously pushed forward in litigation after being told at multiple junctures that "we will never pay anything on top of the original policy." At the end of the day, the result is confidential, but what he did for this family was life altering. What it did for me, was to reinvigorate my purpose and remind me of the great power we have as civil justice lawyers. It's easy to somewhat lose sight of what it's all about.
