This is a 5-star review (but I want to give 10) of Dr. Brooke Phillips at Hayashida Physical Therapy in Goleta, CA. If you know anything at all about myofascial pain syndrome, or MPS, it's this: if you suffer from it, you just want it gone. (I had endured it in my neck for over two decades.) Maybe you've tried physical therapy already with little to no results. Or you've been attempting self-manipulation techniques such as a Theracane or a foam roller. I now use these tools for maintenance in addition to physical therapy because no one technique could achieve what Dr. Brook Phillips has done for me in a relatively short period of time. In January 2025, Dr. Amit Nathani performed a reverse total shoulder replacement and a bicep tenodesis on my right side. Both of these procedures were highly successful, way beyond my expectations. However, taking into consideration my age of 67, and this not being my first joint replacement, coupled with Rheumatoid Arthritis and a lifetime of bad posture, the recovery from this has been absolute hell. I'm now at 10 months post-surgery. I fully intend to reach '100%' again, but I can't say when. I still have some weakness. Recently, I pushed it too far and had to stop everything completely, but the therapeutic devices. Dr. Brook anticipated my needs and pain relief goals not only in the hands-on therapy but for post-therapy management as well. I'm positive that without his excellent care, I would not have progressed this far so successfully. When I say "so successfully", I mean with so much reduction in the pain department. It literally improves every couple of days and rarely regresses. When I say "progressed this far," let me tell you what that really means: I now have perfectly relaxed shoulders, my back is straight, my hips are tucked in, and I walk with a normal gait. Before this, if you take every physical aspect I just mentioned and imagine it at its worst, that is what I had. And along with all those conditions came a lot of pain. But as Dr. Brook addressed my physical limitations and, one by one, removed them, I was able to restructure how I carry myself. And along with the lower back pain that was always in the background, and the painful left knee scraping that required injections, the punishing MPS- all of these painful limitations are gone now. And it started really with the therapy for the shoulder recovery, but he just naturally moved into addressing anything else that was causing me pain. You wouldn't believe how back pain affects other parts of your body! I am immensely grateful for Dr. Brook. You must believe me when I say I know physical therapy: I was in a devastating car wreck 40 years ago, and I've had a lot of PT since then. Recently, I asked him, "Are foam rollers new? Because with all my issues, why did no therapist ever suggest using one? It has helped me tremendously." He said, "No, they aren't new. Then he confessed that every therapist has a different technique... But I know what is really going on here. It's the DPT and OCS after his name that give Dr. Brook distinction and are the reason for my success. I went in for a bit of therapy after surgery, and ended up addressing nearly every other issue that was currently giving me pain. Being able to manage the pain with tools that I now have at my disposal is something huge for me. Thank you, Dr. Brook
