I currently have business inside of the building in which this law firm's office is located. After meeting with my insurance company in an adjacent office I came to the main lobby to make some necessary calls and review documentation. The bench I am sitting on faces the office of Scherr, Cole and Murphy. This lobby is for the entire building, the benches are labeled with the building number. As I am sitting I notice a man exit one door in the lobby and enter the law office. Shortly thereafter another man comes up to the door from inside the law office and eyes me up. He wasn't expecting for me to be looking because he quickly exited the doorway upon seeing my head wasn't down. Clearly he was checking to see if I was still there. Shortly after that a man pokes himself out of the door and rudely asks if I had an appointment in this building. His eyebrows were raised, his tone was that of someone clearly suspicious. There was no greeting or pleasantry. Maybe because I have a plastic bag with me? Maybe because of the way I am dressed? Maybe because... Regardless I explained to the gentleman that while I did not have an appointment I had stopped by an insurance office and was due to go back in after a phone call, which I was in the lobby to field. He just kind of stared back at me without saying anything. I asked the man who he was and if he worked in the office he was poking out of. His tone turned defensive. He told me he works there, I asked if he worked for the office or if he was on the letterhead. He explained that he was an attorney and I again asked if he was on the letterhead at which point he said he was. Again I asked who he was, I asked: "Are you Scherr, Cole, or Murphy?" He finally said "Murphy". Not a pleasant interaction but I laughed and told him to have a good day. He said nothing and ducked back inside the office. If you're going to be nosy, be friendly.
